"Brief Sketch of Life of S. F. Shields" (Allerton, IA Newspaper, August 17, 1919) In the death of Samuel F. Shields, the last survivor of Andersonville prison has passed away from Allerton and possibly from the county. Andersonville was a prison for about one year and in that time 52,000 brave men were confined within its limits of about 20 acres, and 13,000 of that heroic crowd perished and are buried in the beautiful grounds near by. Comrade Shields was one among the survivors at the close of the war; but no one can go through such indescribable conditions without most serious injury to the entire physical system; therefore it is surprising that one can live through it, but still more surprising that one can live to old age and render continuous service to the community such as our comrade did in Allerton. No other man has filled so many offices both in the township and city -- Justice of the Peace, Marshall, Mayor, City Clerk and member of the School Board -- Samuel Shields not only served but served faithfully and efficiently in the office or on any committee; he was always on time and did his full duty in the work at hand: therefore he was an agreeable man to work with. He was a good pat[r]iotic citizen, faithful in all these departments of life that will be cherished in memory by this community -- He was a comrade indeed.
